Pain is incomparable. Commiserating is a guessing game. Colors are seen differently, myriad shades of pain blind eyes. Yet much of the lament derives from the search for pity; pitting us to compete over tenderness, as we were taught to compete over everything. "Human nature," we are led to believe. Led by whom? And to what end? Barons made millions funding wars on both sides, providing a blueprint for exploitation. Masochists boast over their cicatrices. Love, too vast to explain, remains abstract. The winner of the war still loses, a pyrrhic victory for the one and for the masses.
